Mickleton Youth Club - 2009

When the Youth Club opened in November 2008 there were seven members and by Christmas the number had grown to twelve.

In January 2009 regular Monday Youth Club meetings resumed after the Christmas break. When the Youth Club reopened the number of young people attending was still 12.

At this stage it was decided that a Youth Worker should be engaged and the Youth Service was approached. The cost for the service was £1875. The Community Activities Working Party had raised £500 towards this cost.

Also at this time the Community Activities Working Party (Mickleton in Bloom) was asked to give a presentation to The Mickleton Society outlining the work of the group. The Society expressed specific support for the work with Young People and made a donation of £150 towards the engagement of a Youth Worker.

The Parish Council was approached and gave a grant of £250 towards the Youth Worker cost.

An application was made to The Richard Porter Trust who made a grant of £250 towards the cost of employing a Youth Worker.

The Village Hall management Committee also donated £250.

In a short time £1400 towards the cost of a Youth Worker for one year had been raised from within the village.

By early February the number of young people attending the Youth Club had risen to 24 and by the end of the month there were 31 young people on the register.

A late submission was made for an Integrated Youth Offer and the Club was given a grant of £550 to support the meeting room hire charge and pay for a range of activities to help establish the group.

Attendance at the North Cotswold Partnership Group Meeting helped establish the nature of other activities and groups’ meeting in the area and it was decided to work together wherever practicable and where the best interest of the young people could be served more effectively.

The Youth Club members at this time were actively involved in the Expression of Interest to Cotswold District Council regarding Play Builders Funding. This proved to be unsuccessful in the Year 1 funding for the Cotswolds; Mickleton was included with 5 others in the funding bid for Year 2 but was again unsuccessful. The young people are continuing to work on ideas for the development of the Junior Playing Fields and the services of a local landscape designer will collate these into a formal plan ready for submission as a Community Projects bid.

The Junior Playing Fields Parish Council subcommittee met at the Youth Club and looked at the ideas and expressed their support.

A visit from the Head of the North Cotswold Youth Service and also the Senior Adviser for Extended Services was arranged to discuss progress and plan support for the youth work.

The Mobile Skate Park was booked to visit Mickleton over the February half term. The details were given to the club at very short notice and the attendance was low, perhaps fortunate as the skate coach was very late arriving and the ramps could not be set up as he had the key to the transport trailer.

The Youth Club joined Young Gloucester. A visit from a Youth Leader helped with a survey of need. This was supported by an additional survey at the Fun Day in May.

The Village Family Fun Day in May was very successful. At least 260 young people and their parents attended the event, which was held in the Primary School grounds. Supported by Cotswold District Council, through World Jungle and Clever Curves Skate Park, the Youth Service, Play Rangers, Young Gloucester, Costcutter Village Stores, the Post Office Stores, Play Group, Guides, Brownies, Ilmington Football Club, First Responder, and the School all gave the day a firm footing.

The Youth Club played a significant part in the Fun Day, from helping to set up the day at 9.00, looking after and managing a variety of activities, to clearing the site at 6.00 pm.

The total cost of the day was £25 thanks to the generous support of the groups already mentioned. Some local groups also managed to raise funds for themselves through their activities.

The Community Activities Working Party had set aside £500 to support the day. The balance at the end of the day meant that they were immediately able to transfer another (£475) to the Youth Worker budget thus meeting the outstanding cost for the first year.

A qualified Youth Worker from the Gloucestershire Youth Service began working with the young people on 13th May, supported initially by 2 volunteers, subsequently two additional adults have supported on a number of weeks.

Once the Youth Club was on a firm footing we were able to apply for an Integrated Youth Grant from the Cotswold District Council to further support the activities of the Club.

The success of the bid has enabled financial support for:

Venue Hire - the young people meet each Monday during term time. The increase in numbers (now 59 on the register – regularly 30 each week) has meant that there are now two sessions, and the age groups are Years 6, 7 and 8, with Year 9+ in a separate group.

Transport – an invitation to join Play Rangers for a day of activity in Cheltenham was accepted and a group of young people had a very enjoyable day – transport booked through the village “Hedgehog”.

Dance Sessions – held over 10 weeks in the Village Hall for two hours on Sunday afternoons have given an enjoyable and exhausting activity for a group of young people.

Water splash 2009 was held at the Cotswold Water Park in July - unfortunately our grant had not come through and the cost of travel and entry could not be subsidised and so proved too expensive. However we have booked our place for July 2010!!!

Visits – a tenpin bowling trip has been organised for Monday, 29th December.

Materials & equipment – we have been able to purchase a variety of Art & Craft materials.

Film making session – the grant has helped the purchase of a camcorder. Our activities are now regularly recorded.

North Cotswold Group Activities – we are able to join with Weston-sub-Edge, Blockley and Willersley for group activities.

Activity weekend – planned for early 2010

Large screen (Village Hall) - a planned film evening

Beauty session – professional support for the young people

A six week cookery course – Pilot Light – has proved to be very successful.

Two young people who have attended the sessions are very keen to share their experience with other members and have decided to apply to the Youth Opportunities Fund for further support.

They have devised a series of cooking lessons which will culminate in a community meal prepared by two teams under their leadership, to be judged by those attending. They have applied for money to purchase utensils which could be based in the Village Hall. They see this as useful to the community as a whole but also the basis for future cookery focussed activities for young people which they feel are necessary life skills which are not always met elsewhere.

During the year we have held two barbeques and welcomed visitors from the village, the Parish Council, the Police Service, Young Gloucester and the Youth Service to our club evenings and activities.

On Monday, 28th December the club joined with our North Cotswold partners and group of 60 young people enjoyed ten pin bowling at Leamington Spa.

The Youth Club has supported village events. Young people were present at the Village Fete and raised funds in support. They have made the decorations for the Christmas tree on the Plantation and intend to support the PC Outdoor Carol Service.

The senior group are already discussing the management of the Youth Club for 2010. A first move is possibly a change of age grouping to even the numbers between the two sessions. They made the original choice and have suggested a review is necessary for 2010.

This regrouping of the Youth Club and the outcomes from the cookery sessions are two developments which exemplify the many outcomes the Youth Club has given to the young people of Mickleton – young people taking decisions and making informed and considered choices for the community.
