Gardening Club Outings 2011

Thursday, 12th May – Abbey House Gardens – Malmesbury

 

Home of ‘The Naked Gardeners’ Ian and Barbara Pollard in ancient Malmesbury, Abbey House Gardens incorporates gardening ideas, beautiful plants and the country’s largest private collection of roses as well as double herbaceous borders and fabulous specimen trees and shrubs.

 

The gardens are set beside old Malmesbury Abbey just five miles from the M4, Junction 17.  Refreshments available in the Apple Store Tea-room or in Malmesbury close by.

Thursday, 14th July – Burford House Gardens and Stockton Bury, Worcestershire

 

The seven acres of lawn and stunning borders of Burford House Gardens sweep along the banks of the River Teme and contain a National Clematis Collection of around 400 varieties.  Some 2000 other plant varieties adorn the gardens around the 3-storey Georgian mansion set in a beautiful location between Tenbury Wells and Ludlow .  The Burford Garden Company is responsible for the gardens and also provide a shopping experience to help you find a range of products for the home and garden.

 

The four-acre site of Stockton Bury Gardens near Leominster , Hereford , house an impressive collection of rare and unusual plants that thrive on heavy clay soil.  The garden, set amongst medieval farm buildings offers a working kitchen garden, pigeon house, tithe barn (now a restaurant) grotto, cider press pools, mock ruined chapel and a rill.

Sunday, 16th October – Thenford House Garden/Arboretum, near Banbury

 

The home of former Conservative Deputy Prime Minister, Michael Heseltine – includes a 50-acre garden and arboretum of 3,500 trees and shrubs at Thenford House in his 400-acre estate in Thenford, Northamptonshire, six miles east of Banbury.  Michael and his wife Anne began restoring the gardens in the 1970’s and were much influenced by the Hidcote Manor Gardens .  The arboretum has become one of the most important private collections in the U.K.
